Summertime in Phuket Survival Guide

Being a tropical island, Phuket naturally has an amazing summer season. There are innumerable memorable, unique and beautiful ways to spend your time in Phuket. From iconic cultural attractions to world-class water sports and awe-inspiring viewpoints, you won’t have any trouble filling your days and nights.

The following is our quick guide for making the most of summertime in Phuket; we cover six key areas: Seasons, Sports, Sightseeing, Spa, Supplies and Stay Save! So, without further ado, let’s take a look and see what sparks your interest…

Seasons

For many people, the “hot” season in Phuket is the best time of year to visit the island. Filling the months between the cooler “high” season and wetter “rainy” season when the annual monsoons hit, this time of year is known for consistent temperatures in the mid-thirties (34°C) with slight humidity (offset by the sea breeze). Now is an ideal time to visit the island as water sports are all on the go thanks to abundancy breezes; the crowds are not too abundant (highest from November – February over the festive season); and prices are relatively low (compared to other peak times of the year).

Sports

If you can think of it, you can find it on the island! Phuket is truly paradise for adrenaline junkies. Obviously, water sports like scuba diving, paragliding, kite surfing, sea kayaking, jet skiing, bodyboarding, banana boat riding, adventure diving, flyboarding, paddle boarding and snorkeling are at the top of the list. Beyond that, you can try zorbing, go-kart racing, off-road ATV (quad bike) riding, ziplining, paramotoring, elephant trekking, Bungy jumping and more. There truly is an overabundance of sporty and active things to do on the island for all skill levels, fear levels and budget levels.

Sightseeing

If you do get bored with sitting by the pool or need a day off from your sports, there are plenty of other summertime activities to keep you busy. Firstly, you can pack a bag and head to one of the island’s hip beach clubs, of which Patong boasts many famous ones. Otherwise, consider going for sunset drinks at one of the island's lovely viewpoints (i.e., Promthep Cape, Black Rock, Rang Hill, etc.). Shopaholics should head to the Old Town on Sunday for their famous Night Market (5:00 – 9:00 pm), set amid colourful Sino-Portuguese houses. For culture, don’t miss a visit to the Big Buddha. And for something really different, head to one of the stunning nearby islands, such as Surin, Similian, James Bond (Khao Phing Kan) or Phi Phi.

Spas

If you’re keeping busy and/or had an arduous journey to the island, you might want to consider spending the afternoon at a spa. Phuket is home to an opulent array of independent and chain outlets. Whether you want an anti-ageing facial, back-cracking Thai massage, invigorating sauna or healing body scrub, you’ll find a spa and service to suit your needs. If you’re staying at a hotel near Bangla Road, you’ll have no trouble finding a reputable facility to get relaxing at. Whether you want a quick 45-minute back and shoulder massage or three-hour total body spa therapy, you can find what you’re after anywhere on the island.

Supplies

All the shops in and around Bangla Road in Patong will be able to kit you out for your stay on the island. From sunscreen and bikinis to inflatable rafts and lounges to portable sun shades, they sell anything and everything related to the beach. So, if you’re staying at any of the many hotels in Patong Beach, you won’t have any trouble stocking-up on depleted, forgotten, lost or overlooked items. Phuket is also home to a plethora of well-stocked international supermarkets, so if you need to source specialist gluten-free bread, lactose-free milk or vegan cookies, don’t worry, you can find all of that and more.
